NASSP Student Leadership Advisory Committee Member
Earners of this badge are engaged, forward-thinking student leaders and school leaders. The committee is comprised of students, advisers, and principals who have been selected to serve based on demonstrated leadership in their schools and communities. Over a two-year period, committee members collaborate on projects and activities, present at conferences, and meet with various stakeholders. Committee members also select, promote, and advocate for the bi-annual national student initiative.

Earning Criteria

Students must be members of student council at a school with an active membership with National Student Council or be members of a local chapter of National Honor Society or National Junior Honor Society. Students are nominated by their State Principals Association or their State Student Council Association before applying for committee membership. Student members are recommended to and approved by the NASSP Board based on their leadership and commitment to their schools and communities.

Advisers must be the adviser for a student council at a school with an active membership with National Student Council or the adviser of a local chapter of National Honor Society or National Junior Honor Society. Advisers are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to and promotion of student voice in their communities. Adviser members are recommended to and approved by the NASSP Board before joining the committee.

Principals must be a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals and have a student council with an active membership with National Student Council or have a local chapter of National Honor Society or National Junior Honor Society. Principals are selected based on their demonstrated commitment to and promotion of student voice in their communities. Principal members are recommended to and approved by the NASSP Board before joining the committee.

Committee members receive personalized advocacy training from NASSP before meeting with their elected officials in the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate. Committee members advocate for topics specific to their schools, communities, and states. The student members on the committee then prepare an advocacy presentation for student leaders across the United States and U.S. Territories at NASSP's LEAD Conferences.

Committee members are responsible for presenting workshops, emceeing conferences, and participating in panel presentations related to their roles as well as the NASSP National Initiative. Additionally, committee members may occasionally present for or provide information to the NASSP Board of Directors, state or local officials, and local newspapers.

Committee members are responsible for writing and contributing to Advise Magazine, the official publication of the National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, and National Student Council. Committee members may also be asked to provide content for use on social media and contribute to articles in the Principal Leadership magazine or local newspapers.
