AAMFT Approved Supervisor Designation is the highest and most prestigious designation in the MFT field. Our Approved Supervisors fulfill stringent education and clinical training requirements to achieve this designation. Becoming an AAMFT Approved Supervisor demonstrates a strong commitment of developing one’s supervisory skills as well as helping the next generation of systemic family therapists. It is recognized globally and accepted by most US state licensing boards requiring MFT supervision.

As outlined in the Approved Supervision Designation Standards Handbook, Approved Supervisors must be current Clinical Fellows. Pre-Clinical Fellows are eligible to become Approved Supervisors only if applying under the COAMFTE doctoral track.

The educational requirement for the AAMFT Approved Supervisor Designation is a completion of an AAMFT 30-hour fundamentals of supervision course which includes 15 hours of didactic and 15 hours of interactional components.

Approved Supervisor candidates obtain clinical supervision training for a minimum of 18 months, providing a minimum of 180 hours of supervision to MFT trainees,and obtaining 36 hours of mentoring from AAMFT Approved Supervisor mentor. Candidates supervise at least 2 supervises during the training period.
